What is the Singapore AI Safety Fellowship?

The Singapore AI Safety Fellowship is an independent research fellowship that connects fellows with leading mentors working on technical AI safety and governance. Fellows conduct research for three months in Singapore, building the skills and relationships for international coordination on AI safety.

It's built for researchers who want their work to inform real-world AI safety practice, on top of publishing it. Singapore's role as a globally connected, policy-engaged hub makes that possible.

Stipend and housing

$5,000 SGD per month, with housing provided throughout the fellowship.

Who should apply

This fellowship is for emerging talented researchers ready to do serious work in an international, collaborative environment. Candidates should also demonstrate:

• A track record of strong technical research
• Genuine interest in helping steer AI's development toward good outcomes for humanity
• Comfort operating across cultures and disciplines

This is a full-time, residential fellowship — fellows relocate to Singapore for three months.

FAQ

What does the application involve?

A written application (~1 hour), then standardized assessments for shortlisted candidates, followed by a mentor-specific work task and/or interview.

How does mentor matching work?

When you fill out the application form, you'll rank your preferred research area and mentors. Mentors will review shortlisted applications and from their end rank their preferred candidates - we use both to make the best match.

Can I participate remotely?

It's an in-person program in Singapore.

Can I participate part-time?

The fellowship is full-time. Small side commitments are usually fine and you can mention them in your application.

What outputs are expected?

Usually a research paper, but we're open to other formats if they suit the project.

Can fellows work in teams?

Some mentors have fellows work in teams, others work one-on-one. Either way, collaboration between fellows is common and encouraged.

What about housing and travel?

We cover travel to and from Singapore. If you don't already live here, you'll get accommodation covered, on top of your stipend.

Do I need a visa?

We will arrange for visas for accepted fellows to the program.
