Job description
Singapore AI Safety Hub • Singapore
East-West AI Safety Fellowship — Singapore
Update: We have already hired for this role and are no longer accepting applications.
Contract: Full-time, fixed-term (6 months to 1 year renewable, could convert to permanent role)
Location: Singapore/remote (largest part of 3 months in Singapore for the Fellowship duration)
You will need to be in Singapore during the fellowship, but can be based remotely before and after the fellowship. If you’re based remotely, you will need to have at least 4 hours overlap with Singapore’s timezone (9am - 7pm SGT). We can sponsor your work visa in Singapore.
Experience: Previous experience managing a fellowship
Salary: Competitive with industry rates based on experience and location[1]
Reports to: Program Director
About the Role
We are looking for a Fellowship Manager to help us build something that does not yet exist: a unique program bringing Eastern and Western researchers together in Singapore to work on AI safety problems with outputs designed to reach government/policymakers. No other fellowship sits at this intersection.
This is a founding role with real autonomy. You will design the program structure, recruit fellows and mentors, manage government partnerships, and deliver an exceptional in-person experience for our inaugural 3-month cohort. You will not be starting from scratch. The theory of change would already be validated with local and international stakeholders, key partners in place and the resources secured — your job is to build and run the programme.
We are looking for someone who combines genuine interest in AI safety with strong operational instincts and the range to work credibly across researchers, government, and funders. If that sounds like the kind of work you want to do, we want to hear from you.
What you will own
Program design and delivery (40%)
- Own the program design and inaugural cohort delivery end-to-end
- Build the operational infrastructure for future cohorts
- Track metrics and produce impact reporting
Recruitment and talent pipeline (30%)
- Lead outreach and recruitment for the inaugural cohort of 10-15 fellows, with a focus on China and Singapore/Southeast Asia.
- Recruit and retain 5-6 mentors - incentivizing their engagement, managing relationships and expectations throughout the program.
- Build and maintain a pipeline of candidates for future cohorts.
- Cultivate a strong cohort culture through program design — fostering the cross-regional relationships and professional trust that are central to the fellowship's theory of change.
- Support the development of an alumni network that remains active and connected after the cohort ends.
Government and stakeholder engagement (20%)
- Support the development and management of the fellowship's government partnerships, including coordinating research co-design sessions and end-of-cohort presentations.
- Build and maintain relationships with institutional partners — universities, research institutes, and AI labs — across the region.
Reporting and communications (10%)
- Synthesise progress for funders and stakeholders
- Contribute to the fellowship's public communications, including the cohort report and policy briefs.
- Pitch in on other operational tasks
Who you are
This role requires someone who can operate across very different worlds — researchers, government officials, funders, and early-career fellows — and be credible in all of them. Here is what that looks like in practice.
- Skilled operator who can also think strategically. You can design a fellowship from first principles, build the systems to run it, and make fast judgment calls when things go sideways — without needing to escalate every decision.
- Interpersonally-savvy. You read rooms, build trust across cultures quickly, and can turn a conference reception into three valuable conversations. You understand that recruiting an Asian researcher to a Singapore fellowship or convincing a senior AI safety researcher to commit three months of mentorship time, requires a different approach from posting on a jobs board.
- Genuine interest in AI safety. You do not need to be a technical researcher, but you need enough working knowledge to engage credibly with the researchers and government partners you will be working alongside and enough intellectual curiosity to keep learning.
- Community/program builder who is passionate about helping people do their best work. You know that cohort culture is not built through scheduled team-building — it emerges from how a programme is designed, who is selected, and how the in-person environment is run. You care about growing the community.
- You thrive in ambiguity and early-stage environments. This is a founding role. There is no playbook. You will be making consequential decisions with incomplete information, and you are energised by that rather than unsettled by it.
This role spans several domains and no candidate will be strong in all of them. That said, we are particularly excited about candidates who bring some combination of:
- Experience managing research fellowships, academic programmes or similar talent pipelines
- Deep Asia-Pacific regional expertise; working proficiency in Chinese (Mandarin) would be a bonus
- Existing relationships in the global AI safety, AI governance or technology policy community
What We Offer
- Compensation. Competitive with industry rates based on experience and location
- Impact. You will be one of a small number of people globally working to build the infrastructure for East-West AI safety collaboration — at the moment it matters most.
- Ownership: You will have significant ownership of the fellowship program from start to finish, and get to shape the gold standard vision of what a fellowship looks like.
- Access & Growth. You’ll be plugged into the Singapore and international AI safety and governance ecosystem, joining us at events and conferences, and collaborating with leading thinkers and practitioners from around the world. This will allow you to build relationships that last beyond your time at SASH and explore ideas at the frontier of AI.

About SASH
We are Singapore’s first AI safety and governance non-profit. Launched as an ecosystem-builder (co-working, events, upskilling) we are now expanding into technical and governance research and capacity-building. Our research projects bring together stakeholders from Singapore and the broader region (government, universities, industry) with leading international AI governance experts to tackle some of the hardest challenges in the international governance of AI.
We are especially interested in mitigating catastrophic risks from AI, with some of our forthcoming work focusing on the governance of AI Agents, mitigating misuse of AI systems by malicious actors and verification mechanisms that could enable international agreements on AI.
We are a team of 6 fulltime staff, half of which are Singapore based, with contractors and collaborators around the world.
[1] For example, a candidate based in Singapore could expect a salary range of USD90,000 – 120,000 per annum, commensurate with experience.
