Job description
BlueDot Impact • London, United Kingdom
London, United Kingdom
## Who is BlueDot Impact? We're a philanthropic startup **building the workforce that protects humanity**. Since 2022, we've trained over 10,000 people in AI safety and biosecurity. Our alumni work at Anthropic, DeepMind, the UK AI Security Institute, and dozens of other organisations shaping how transformative technologies affect the world. Each month, we train over 1,000 people and deploy over $1M in grants to accelerate the most exceptional people coming through our pipelines. We're a small team headquartered in San Francisco. We've raised $71M from Coefficient Giving. ## Why this role matters Governments and other powerful institutions need exceptional people who understand where advanced AI is going, and who make decisions that steer AI towards better outcomes for humanity. These institutions are starved for talent. Many of the people making AI policy decisions today have no understanding of the technology, the risks it poses, or what governments could do to steer it. Our Frontier AI Governance course is changing that. So far, 2,200 people have taken part in the course, and the wider BlueDot alumni community includes 206 staff at frontier AI companies, 147 staff at UK, US, EU and international government institutions, 282 staff at advocacy orgs and think-tanks, and 274 staff at technical AI safety research orgs. The course gives people a rigorous introduction to the field, motivates them to pivot their career, and helps us identify the most exceptional people who we then steer towards the most impactful opportunities. You'll own the course end to end: who the course is for, how we reach them, who gets in, what they learn, and how we accelerate the most exceptional participants. ## What you'll do **Set the course and talent strategy** - Determine which people the field most needs, which audiences the course should prioritise, and where the selection bar should sit. - Develop the course strategy, including its positioning, learning outcomes, applicant pipeline, selection, talent identification and the most valuable routes after the course. - Interview governance experts and hiring managers to understand what exceptional candidates need to know and which talent gaps matter most. **Fill the course with the people the field needs** - Find promising people who could make a big difference in AI governance and convince them to join the course. - Build partnerships with influential people and talent-dense networks, and encourage referrals. - Write publicly about frontier AI governance, field-building, and the course, so that you increase your credibility and build your profile as a domain expert and trusted voice. **Identify and accelerate exceptional participants** - Judge potential from noisy evidence, including applications, course work, discussions and one-to-one conversations. - Build trusted relationships with the strongest participants, understand their real constraints and give advice they act on. - Connect exceptional people to roles, fellowships, funding and collaborators, including recommending career-transition grants when funding is the blocker. **Decide what the course teaches** - Own the curriculum and keep it current as the field changes. - Turn difficult and contested governance questions into excellent learning experiences, so that participants develop their own takes. - Write new blog posts when no suitable resource exists explaining important concepts, or commission writing from others. **Run an excellent course** - Own the participant experience and ensure strong participants complete the course and leave ready to take meaningful action. - Build a bench of excellent facilitators who challenge participants and identify top talent. - Work alongside BlueDot's course operations team. Note that you’re not expected to do course operations yourself as we have a dedicated team for that — your time goes to strategy, curriculum and people. ## About you You might be a great fit if you: - **Have founded or run programs.** You’ve set up a talent program, built an educational product, or launched other types of people-focused programs. You can point to exceptional people who progressed because of it. - **Reason sharply about frontier AI governance.** You can make the strongest case on both sides of a live proposal, like whether or not we should ban frontier open weights models, and you can debate with experts on these topics. - **Spot exceptional people early.** You can quickly identify how promising someone is based on their written work and a conversation with them. - **Build trust quickly and can shape people’s decisions.** People trust you quickly after meeting you, open up to you about their constraints and needs, and take action based on your advice. - **Write and teach clearly.** You can explain difficult ideas to smart newcomers in order to improve their thinking and understanding, and you write in a compelling way. - **Take ownership.** You move quickly, make difficult decisions, prioritise the most important things, and you do whatever it takes to make whatever you’re working on excellent. Direct experience in or near government is useful but not required. We encourage speculative applications — most strong candidates will not meet every criteria! ## What we offer - **Leverage on the field through its people:** Your judgment will shape who enters the AI governance field, what they learn, and what they do next. - **Ownership:** The course is yours. You'll have the freedom to change its strategy, positioning, selection, curriculum and talent support. - **Freedom and autonomy:** Our expense policy is "[act in BlueDot's best interest](https://blog.bluedot.org/p/expenses)", and we offer unlimited paid time off and minimal bureaucracy. - **Location:** San Francisco is preferred. We're open to candidates based in Washington DC, London or remote. US visa sponsorship is available. - **$150-200k salary**, a 10% employer 401(k) contribution, and comprehensive health insurance. ## Apply today Applying takes 20-30 minutes, and we encourage you to **apply as soon as possible**. We're evaluating candidates on a rolling basis and want to make an offer quickly. ## Application process - Initial application. - Three-hour work test, which is paid. - 45-minute interview. - In-person work trial in San Francisco. We may invite exceptional candidates straight to the in-person work trial. If you have any questions about the role, email [will@bluedot.org](mailto:will@bluedot.org).
