Volunteer Opportunity: Local Group Leader, PauseAI Australia
Our Mission
Implement a temporary pause on the training of the most powerful general AI systems, until we know how to build them safely and keep them under democratic control.
About PauseAI Australia
PauseAI is a global grassroots movement with national chapters and local communities around the world. PauseAI Australia was founded in 2025 and currently runs with eight dedicated volunteers across Canberra, Melbourne, and Sydney. We run our own campaigns and coordinate with chapters globally. The role
We’re looking for leaders to start or grow local groups in Australian cities. You’ll plan actions, mobilise volunteers, and coordinate with the national chapter. 3-15 hours per week, flexible.
What you’ll do
- Recruit and coordinate volunteers, welcome newcomers, and organise events together.
- Engage elected officials through grassroots lobbying and meetings.
- Gather petition signatures, survey responses, and engage the public in PauseAI’s advocacy efforts.
- Build relationships with local activist groups, journalists, and responsible AI organisations.
- Manage social media outreach and event promotion in your city.
- Meet monthly with PauseAI Australia team and align with quarterly campaigns.
What we’re looking for
- Passion for AI safety and alignment with PauseAI’s mission.
- Ability to plan and execute workshops and public events.
- Solid communication skills and ability to engage with diverse communities.
- Self-motivated, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Committed to peaceful change through democratic channels, following our Code of Conduct and Core Values
